Hitoyoshi Kuma, Kumamoto

The Hitoyoshi Kuma region is located in the southeastern part of Kumamoto Prefecture, bordering Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures. With its rich natural landscapes and cultural heritage, this area was recognized as a Japan Heritage site in April 2015.

Hitoyoshi Onsen

Ichifuji Ryokan’s hot spring source comes from “Hitoyoshi Onsen,” which springs from the upper reaches of the Kuma River. Hitoyoshi Onsen is a hydrogen carbonate spring that is effective for improving diabetes, arthritis, gastrointestinal disorders, constipation, and relieving fatigue.

Passionate Hospitality with Local Kumamoto Flavors

Family-run Ichifuji Ryokan has always adhered to the philosophy of local production for local consumption, collaborating with local farmers and fishermen to carefully prepare delicious dishes using local ingredients.

Dinner

The recommended combination set meal includes sweetfish caught from the Kuma River, local specialty horse sashimi, and karashi renkon (a local dish from Oita and Kumamoto where lotus root holes are filled with mustard miso and deep-fried in batter). The sweetfish has firm flesh, horse sashimi is high in protein and low in fat, and karashi renkon offers rich flavors, particularly suitable to pair with local Kuma shochu. For guests who enjoy drinking, the hotel also offers tastings of various rice shochu produced in the Kuma region.

Breakfast

Breakfast is a Japanese-style buffet, all prepared with local ingredients. The variety of handmade dishes provides guests with energy for the entire day.

Various Sizes of Warm-Toned Traditional Japanese Rooms

Ichifuji Ryokan, converted from an old Japanese building, features all Japanese-style guest rooms. The warm color scheme accented with ichimatsu patterns (checkered designs) creates a comfortable and cozy atmosphere. Rooms range from 6 to 20 tatami mats in various sizes, suitable for both groups and individuals.

The guest rooms preserve the nostalgic atmosphere of the old building, as if returning to a movie scene from bygone days. Imagine yourself as tonight’s protagonist, relax your body and mind, and fully experience the elegant atmosphere of this historic building!

*The old building’s Japanese-style rooms also offer special value rooms for 1 to 3 guests. Please inquire for details.

Modern and Showa-Era Style Hot Spring Baths

Ichifuji Ryokan’s hot springs are open 24 hours a day. The Mount Fuji painting on the wall of the large bath was created by one of only three bath lacquer painters in all of Japan, depicting the natural landscapes and cultural features of Hitoyoshi City with a lively and cheerful style. After enjoying Ichifuji Ryokan’s Showa-era style large bath, guests can also choose the hotel’s “half-price ticket” plan to visit nearby hot springs and experience different bathing atmospheres.

Ichifuji Ryokan, with its Little Kyoto atmosphere, feels as warm as home. The first-floor coffee shop and second-floor reading space offer relaxation and extraordinary leisure time.

The attached shop carries various souvenirs from the Kuma region, such as Kuma shochu and local specialty sweets.

Experience Historical Sentiment and Feel the Changes of Time!

“Ichifuji Ryokan” is located in Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture, about a 10-minute walk from JR Hitoyoshi Station. Hitoyoshi City is called the Little Kyoto of Kyushu, and the entire city is filled with the nostalgic atmosphere of a castle town. Strolling through Hitoyoshi City, you can explore ancient castle ruins and tourist attractions such as the National Treasure Aoi Aso Shrine. Every late April, large festival activities are also held at the Hitoyoshi Castle ruins.

Every August, a fireworks festival is held on the Kuma River near the ryokan. In the summer night, brilliant fireworks burst forth in the sky in spectacular display. For those wanting some exciting activities or sports, you can ride traditional Japanese wooden boats and ride the waves down the Kuma River, one of Japan’s three major rapids. Enjoying the beautiful scenery along the banks while navigating the tense and rapid currents offers a unique experience.

After enjoying the rich sightseeing programs in the Hitoyoshi Kuma region, why not relax and rest at Ichifuji Ryokan to relieve travel fatigue.
