Nagasaki Shimabara Peninsula
The Shimabara Peninsula, covering only 460 square kilometers, is an area extending southeast from Nagasaki Prefecture, surrounded by sea on three sides. With its unique volcanic terrain and abundant hot springs, beautiful mountains and waters, and captivating scenery, it is Japan’s first “Geopark.” The peninsula has an oceanic climate that is warm and rainy, with mild winters and cool summers, making it an excellent summer retreat. Additionally, during Japan’s isolation period from the 17th to 19th centuries, Nagasaki was the only open port, so the island features Western-style villas and exotic architecture throughout, creating a very distinctive character.
Located at the center of Unzen-Amakusa National Park on the Shimabara Peninsula, Unzen Shinyu Ryokan is one of the premier hot spring ryokans in Nagasaki Prefecture’s “Unzen Onsen Village.”
Unzen Hot Springs
The hot springs at Unzen Shinyu Ryokan spring from within the ryokan’s own grounds. The spring water contains hydrogen sulfide, which has excellent antibacterial properties and can improve skin conditions such as eczema. Besides eliminating fatigue, it is also quite effective for rheumatism, neuralgia, and joint pain.
Shimabara Peninsula: “Nagasaki’s Stomach” - A Gourmet Paradise
Unzen Shinyu’s cuisine features carefully selected ingredients from the Shimabara Peninsula, known as “Nagasaki’s Stomach.” Blessed with abundant natural resources and proximity to both mountains and sea, the peninsula offers diverse mountain produce and seafood. To allow guests to fully enjoy the flavors of the Shimabara Peninsula, the rich ingredients including mountain delicacies, seafood, and fruits available within a 15-mile radius of the ryokan are transformed by the chef’s skillful artistry into representative dishes that capture the essence of the peninsula’s characteristics.
The cuisine is not bound by formality, making creative use of daily fresh ingredients and combining Japanese and Western cooking techniques to present dishes that excel in color, aroma, taste, and freshness.
Serene, Elegant, and Comfortably Relaxing Spaces
Unzen Shinyu offers three types of guest rooms: Japanese-style, Western-style, and Southeast Asian-style.
The “Getsutei” rooms with private outdoor baths comprise four guest rooms throughout the building, offering views of a traditional Japanese garden with a century of history. The spacious and tranquil space brings peace and stability to the mind. The rooms combining Japanese and Southeast Asian styles feature 22 tatami mats, where the mixed design allows guests to simultaneously experience the beauty of different design elements.
“ZEN” is a standard guest room with 12.5 tatami mats. The natural scenery outside the window and the spacious Japanese-style space help release the stress accumulated from daily life.
Abundant Hot Springs and Luxurious Bathing Experiences
Unzen Shinyu’s grounds feature four hot spring sources. With abundant spring sources and different spring qualities and atmospheres, the hot springs leave bathers feeling refreshed throughout their body with all fatigue eliminated, adding more enjoyment to the bathing experience. The private family bath uses 100% direct-flow sulfur springs from the source, with a distinctive milky white color. It’s open from 16:00 to 24:00 and requires advance reservation.
The large men’s and women’s public baths feature semi-milky white spring water that is closest to the source, maintaining the perfect concentration of sulfur spring components. After bathing, guests feel mentally refreshed and renewed. The attached outdoor baths offer views of the magnificent continuous scenery of the Unzen mountain range, providing healing surrounded by nature.
The beauty salon within the facility offers various treatment programs ranging from 15 to 120 minutes. Occasionally treat yourself and enjoy some extraordinary little pleasures.
The facility also features a shochu bar where you can sample various stored spirits. You can also relax in the café and enjoy afternoon tea time. For purchasing Nagasaki and Shimabara specialty products and shochu, you can find quality items in the on-site shop.
